Sarnia Park Activities

Sarnia Park Gardens

Walk in the eight acres of gardens which were developed to complement the Georgian style lodge. They include a man-made lake, an English garden, rose gardens, an Awanui cherry blossom lawn, a croquet lawn and many other features. The garden was assessed by the New Zealand Garden Trust as a "Garden of Significance" in December 2009.

The 102 year old rimu chapel was relocated from Mamaku in 2005 and is situated on the northern boundary of the 11.2 Ha (29 acres) which make up the entire property. There is a small plantation of pines on the north/east boundary and Polled Angus beef cattle graze the balance of the land.

A walkway/cycle track, which extends from Cambridge to Lake Karapiro, has recently been opened and passes the end of the drive way at Sarnia Park. To maximise this opportunity for guests we have purchased two new bicycles and helmets which are available for hire.

This provides a great opportunity to take a packed lunch and enjoy the local sites including the lake where the recent World Rowing Championships were held.

Walk to the river, or for the keen walker, Lake Karapiro is an easy 4.5 km walk to the east and the town of Cambridge is the same distance away to the west. The walkway/cycle track, is three metres wide and very safe so pack your walking shoes, or put your bike on the back, and explore some of New Zealand's most fertile and beautiful farmland.
